    A relaxing St. Aubin Weekend

    Living here on the rock, we often take for granted what a short hop it is for our friends in London to trade the Tube for the tide. If you’re flying into Jersey from Gatwick or Heathrow, you can be through our tiny airport and sitting harbour-side in St. Aubin with a chilled glass of wine in under twenty minutes.

    As a local, I’m often asked where to go to find the “real” Jersey—the spots that balance our island’s relaxed pace with the high standards you’d expect back in the city. If you’re planning a getaway, here is how I’d spend a perfect weekend in my own backyard.

    Where to Rest Your Head

    When people ask where to stay in the west, I always point them up the hill.

    • The Somerville Hotel: This is one of our “grand dames,” but she’s far from stuffy. It sits perched above St. Aubin’s Village, and honestly, the view from the terrace across the bay toward Elizabeth Castle is one of the best on the island.
    • Panorama: If you want something a bit more intimate, Panorama offers that boutique, “hideaway” feel while still being part of the Somerville’s excellent hospitality circle. It’s ideal for a quiet couple’s retreat.

    Saturday: Rugby and Island Spirit

    You haven’t really met the locals until you’ve stood on the touchline at Jersey RFC. Whether you’re a rugby fanatic or just enjoy a lively social scene, a home match day is an essential island experience. The atmosphere is always welcoming, the banter is light and friendly, and it’s the best place to feel the community heartbeat of Jersey before heading back to the harbour for the evening. On a clear day, save the bus fare and walk down the hill from the club to St Aubin (approx 12 – 15 mins).

    The “Sunday Reset” Walk

    This is my personal favorite loop. It covers everything that makes our landscape special:

    1. Noirmont Point: Head up ghost hill in St Aubin’s (steep but worth it) and you’ll be heading to our south-west headland, Noirmont. It’s rugged, windswept, and the WWII bunkers offer a stark, beautiful contrast to the blue of the Atlantic.
    2. Ouaisne to St. Brelade: then down the hill to Ouaisne Bay (pronounced ‘Way-nay’). At low tide, the beach opens up completely, allowing you to walk across the sand right into St. Brelade’s Bay. Ouaisne is home to another lovely pub ‘The Smugglers’.
    3. The Railway Walk: Avoid trekking back over the headland Instead, find the Railway Walk. Ask for directions to the Elephant Park to join it. This tree-lined trail follows the old tracks all the way back into St. Aubin. It’s flat, peaceful, and feels like a secret green corridor.

    Where We Eat

    In St. Aubin, we are spoiled for choice, but two spots are great all-rounders:

    • The Boathouse: Right on the pier, it’s the place to be for a long lunch. If the sun is out, get a table outside and enjoy some local seafood while watching the tide reclaim the harbor.
    • The Old Court House Inn: For dinner, this is a local institution. It’s packed with history (and characterful nooks). It’s the perfect place to tuck into a steak or a piece of local sea bass and a pint of Liberation Ale.

    Local Tip: Don’t bother with a rental car if you’re staying in St. Aubin. The village is incredibly walkable, and our bus service (the 15) is frequent and easy for getting back to the airport. a pint of Liberation Ale.

If, like me, you tend to get lost in these colours, the best time to visit will be in late April to early June. This is because most orchids bloom at this time, making the entire area a spectacle of hues. When preparing for your trip to the field, it’s essential to plan accordingly. Comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear will serve you well, especially if you plan on exploring the entire orchid field. Also, be mindful of your surroundings and avoid damaging the orchids. However, that shouldn’t stop you from engaging in the orchid-picking activity where a local guide helps you pluck the most beautiful orchids in the land.
